Insurance coverage details for camper rentals

To guarantee you as much protection as possible, Wikicampers and Allianz have designed a custom contract adapted to peer-to-peer rentals.

Assistance

Renters enjoy 24/7 comprehensive assistance. The assistance service primarily involves:

  • ensuring on-site repairs or paying the cost of towing for the inoperative or damaged (i.e. unable to move) vehicle to the closest qualified garage;
  • paying for 2 nights of lodging while the vehicle is being repaired;
  • arranging the return trip of those traveling in the vehicle if it is inoperative for longer than 2 days in France or for longer than 5 days outside of France;
  • paying up to €150 including tax and VAT in taxi fare (taxi ride to the train station, the airport, the garage, the hotel or the rental agency from which the Renter will rent a car);
  • arranging the delivery of the vehicle to the Owner's preferred garage if the vehicle is inoperative for more than 5 days and requires more than 5 hours of repair work, or compensating the Owner for costs incurred during the one-way trip to pick up their vehicle (as agreed with the assistance company).

For the Renter, the assistance service will intervene in or outside of France, if the rented vehicle becomes inoperative during a trip as a result of:

  • an accident
  • a flat tire
  • a fuel type error
  • a breakdown (including any failures that make the Vehicle's operation impossible in normal safety conditions or that can noticeably exacerbate the reason for the breakdown (example: the engine oil light is on).
  • running out of fuel
  • a loss/theft/damage of keys
  • an attempted theft
  • a vehicle theft

The assistance service's intervention cannot take place outside of road infrastructure (on unpaved roads). In addition, it cannot intervene on the highway network nor on expressways due to the governing laws of these roads. In this case, the on-site repair or towing expenses will be reimbursed on presentation of the original invoice. In the event of an accident on a highway or expressway, use the closest emergency telephone, you will be directly connected to a person authorized to send aid.

These services are subject to the sine qua non condition that the inoperative vehicle is repaired by the assistance provider whose contact information is indicated in the rental contract.

For the Owner, the assistance service will intervene in or outside of France for:

• If the vehicle is duly insured and meets the standards of the mandatory vehicle safety inspection and of road traffic laws, and the Owner does not wish to pick it up by their own means, the assistance service can send a driver that is qualified to drive the vehicle to the Owner's residence in France by the most direct route. The wages and the trip of the driver are covered; the travel expenses (gas, potential tolls, boat transfer, hotel and food expenses of passengers) are your responsibility. This service cannot be combined with the "Delivery of the unrepaired vehicle" service.
Delivery of the unrepaired vehicle (in and outside of France) Breakdown and accident only. If the mechanic estimates that the repairs will take longer than 5 days and more than 5 hours of repair work, you may have the vehicle delivered from the garage where it is inoperative to the garage of your choice close to the Owner's residence in France. In the event that the vehicle cannot be dropped off at your preferred garage, the insurer will choose one of the garages closest to the Owner's residence in France.

1. Recovery of the repaired vehicle

 

The assistance service provides the Owner or a person of their choice residing in France, a one-way trip to get their vehicle back, by one of the following:

  • a first class train ticket
  • an economy class plane ticket (if more than 7 hours in train)
  • a rental vehicle in the economy or city category for 48 hours maximum (France only). If your drive time in the rental vehicle requires it, Europ Assistance will organize and take care of hotel expenses (room and board, breakfast), up to €100 including tax and VAT and up to 1 night maximum.
  • if the Owner does not wish to pick up their vehicle by their own means and if the vehicle is duly insured and meets the standards of the mandatory vehicle safety inspection and of road traffic laws, the assistance service can send a driver qualified to drive the vehicle to the Owner's residence by the most direct route. The wages and the trip of the driver are covered; the travel expenses (gas, potential tolls, boat transfer, hotel and food expenses for passengers) are the Owner's responsibility.
 

2. Recovery of the unrepaired vehicle within 5 days

If the mechanic estimates that the repairs will take longer than 5 days and more than 5 hours of repair work, the assistance service will arrange for the delivery of the vehicle to a garage chosen by the owner closest to their residence. In the event that the vehicle cannot be dropped off at the preferred garage, the assistance service will choose one of the garages closest to the Owner's residence.

These services are subject to the sine qua non condition that the vehicle is repaired by the assistance provider whose contact information is indicated in the rental contract.

 

Fully comprehensive insurance: coverage and deductibles

The insurance deductible is the amount that the renter pays out-of-pocket in the event of an incident in which the driver is responsible or in which there is no identified third party only. The deductible can be applied totally or partially, depending on the driver's responsbility. A deductible applies per incident. Multiple deductibles can be applied in the case of non concurrent events.

Cover of All accidental damages except vehicle roof: this coverage is acquired only in the event of an accident with another vehicle or any collision with a stationary or mobile object other than the vehicle.

Cover of Accidental damages to vehicle roof only: this coverage is acquired only in the event of an accident with another vehicle or any collision with a stationary or mobile object other than the vehicle. This protection covers damages to the rented vehicle's roof as a result of the failure to respect the height limit and/or an incorrect assessment of a tunnel's or bridge's height.

Glass breakage: covers the front windshield, side windows, rear windshield, front headlamp lenses, sunroof, of which the glass or organic glass (transparent plastic material used to replace glass) components are broken or cracked.

Accessories and personal property: as part of an automobile accident covered by one of the main protections (Fire, Theft, All accidental damages), the amenities and professional equipment not included in the manufacturer's catalog, the accessories not included in the manufacturer's catalog, audio devices and objects being transported are constitutive features of the insured vehicle up to €3000 including tax and VAT. Only the accessories rented at the same time as the vehicle and permanently affixed to the latter are covered.

The main exclusions:

  • interior damages, regardless of the cause;
  • damages to electronic devices, such as the TV, DVD player, GPS, tablet;
  • tires;
  • fuel type errors;
  • mechanical failures;
  • damages to the insured vehicle caused by items being transported (bicycles, motorbikes ...);
  • fines incurred or damages caused by the impoundment of the vehicle;
  • damages caused intentionally.

Countries covered by fully comprehensive insurance

Renters can travel according to the geographical area indicated below.

Countries covered by the assistance service

The assistance coverage is extended to the following countries:

Albania, Principality of Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark (excluding Greenland), mainland Spain including the Balearic Islands, Estonia, European France, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, Macedonia, Malta, Moldova, Morocco, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, mainland Portugal including Madeira, Principality of Monaco, Romania, Russia (European part, including as far as the Ural Mountains), San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, Tunisia, Turkey, United Kingdom.

Territorial exclusions:

The Territory of Crimea, Luhansk People's Republic and Donetsk People's Republic are excluded. Also excluded are countries, which, on departure day, are in a state of civil or international war, of notable political instability, or are being subjected to natural disasters, public demonstrations, riots, acts of terrorism, retaliation, restriction of the free movement of people and property (whatever the reason, including sanitary, safety, weather-related, etc.), or radioactive decay, or any irradiation coming from an energy source of a radioactive nature.

Cancellation insurance: coverage and deductibles

The insurance deductible is the amount the renter pays out-of-money in the event of a cancellation. The deductible is applicable to the indemnity due. The premium paid for the cancellation insurance cannot be refunded once purchased.

The coverage takes effect on the date of purchase of the present contract and expires the day of the key handover with the renter (on the day of booking).

If no proof is provided or the proof provided does not demonstrate the substance of the covered event that was reported, the insurer has the right to refuse the indemnity request of the insured.

Trip interruption insurance: coverage and deductibles

The coverage comes into effect for an interrupted trip, i.e. a rental that's already begun. The compensation is proportionate to the number of unused rental days. The compensation is reimbursed up to a limit of €2500 including tax and VAT, without exceeding the booking total. The compensation is calculated from the day after the day when the event (medical evacuation, early return, hospitalization on site) that leads to the interruption occurs. The premium paid for the Serenity + option, which includes trip interruption protection, cannot be refunded once purchased.

The purpose of the Trip Interruption coverage is to indemnify the renter when their trip is interrupted with no possibility to continue for one of the following reasons:

  • the medical evacuation of the Insured or of one of their travel companions, organized by the assistance company,
  • the early return of the Insured as a result of one of the following events:
    • in the event of Illness (including Covid-19 and its variants) or Accident, leading to an emergency hospitalization, starting during the trip, of the Insured, of their Spouse, of one of their (grand-)parents, (grand-)children, siblings, of their legal guardian, of the person under their guardianship, participating or not in the Trip;
    • to attend a funeral, following the death of the Spouse of the Insured, of one of their (grand-)parents, (grand-)children, siblings, siblings-in-law, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, fathers-in-law, mothers-in-law, of their legal guardian, of the person under their guardianship, participating or not in the Trip and living in France;
    • in the event of material property damage resulting from a burglary, a fire, water damage or a climate event, in which the presence of the Insured on site is indispensable for the execution of conservation measures and administrative procedures, and affecting more than 50%: their main or secondary residence, their farm, their professional premises if they are an artisan, storekeeper, company director or independent professional.
    • the Theft of the Camper
    • a damage to or a breakdown of the Camper that makes continuing the trip impossible

If no proof is provided within 15 days or if the proof provided does not demonstrate the substance of the covered event that was reported, the insurer has the right to refuse the indemnity request of the insured.

Interior damage insurance: coverage and deductibles

The purpose of the Camper Interior Damage protection is to indemnify the renter for damages caused by them to the interior equipment of the insured vehicle.

Interior equipment of the insured vehicle includes the accessories and amenities required for the use of the camper for living, as well as linens, dishes, and the personal property of those traveling in the vehicle.

This protection is granted in case of:

  • damages to the interior of the rented vehicle as a result of an accident caused by a mishap of the renter, within the limits of the conditions and exclusions hereinafter defined;
  • acts of vandalism, within the limits of the conditions and exclusions hereinafter defined;
  • fire or theft of the Insured Vehicle, within the limits of the conditions and exclusions hereinafter defined.
 

The reimbursement from the insurer is limited to:

  • the cost of damages;
  • maximum amount of coverage detailed below;
  • in any case, the amount of the renter's deductible is deducted from the reimbursable amount.

For electric and household appliances, stereo and video devices, computer hardware, and game consoles, a depreciation is applied. It is calculated at 10 % per year from first use (20 % for computer hardware and game consoles) without being able to exceeding 70 %, the remaining 30 % corresponds to the actual cash value.

Loss of earnings insurance: coverage details

The purpose of the contract is to offer 2 types of protection for all private owners (excluding professionals) renting their vehicle to private individuals via the Wikicampers platform having subscribed to the contract and having paid the annual insurance premium.

1. Loss of Revenue:

As a result of the forced downtime of the vehicle: Insurance of the loss of revenue of confirmed rentals having been cancelled as a result of the forced downtime of the Camper. The Loss of Revenue protection is acquired if the following requirements are cumulatively met:

  • The vehicle's downtime must be a result of a damage, an act of vandalism, a fire, a theft, a glass breakage or a flat tire occurring prior to or during the insured vehicle's rental through Wikicampers ;
  • The damage must be the subject of a damage report made with their personal insurer if the damage occurred prior to the rental or with Wikicampers if the damage occurred during the rental;
  • The rentals to be cancelled must have been booked on the Wikicampers platform;
  • The rentals to be cancelled must have been already been confirmed at the time of the accident (by which the vehicle is rendered inoperative), excluding rentals that had already begun or begin the day of subscription;
  • The damage, act of vandalism, fire, theft or glass breakage sustained by the rented vehicle must lead to the insured vehicle being inoperative for more than 24 hours;
  • The vehicle's downtime is deemed necessary because a safety or comfort component does not permit the vehicle to be rented in normal rental conditions.

Following the cancellation due to the Renter: The purpose of the Loss of Revenue protection is to indemnify the Insured for the loss of revenue of rentals confirmed through Wikicampers that are cancelled by the renter between 29 and 8 days before their departure within the limits of the conditions and exclusions hereinafter defined.

Following the cancellation due to the hospitalization of the Owner: The purpose of the Loss of Revenue cover is to indemnify the Insured for the loss of revenue of rentals confirmed through Wikicampers that are cancelled by the Owner if they cannot hand over the keys to the renter due to their hospitalization within the limits of the conditions and exclusions hereainafter defined.

2. Loss of Use: a fixed rate indemnification for loss of the owner who cannot enjoy their camper for personal use. The coverage is granted if the owner needed to use their vehicle for personal use for a weekend trip or a vacation.

The Loss of Use coverage is acquired if the following requirements are cumulatively met:

  • The insured vehicle becomes inoperative as a result of a damage, an act of vandalism, a fire, a theft, a glass breakage or a flat tire that occurred while the insured vehicle was being rented out through Wikicampers ;
  • The insured vehicle is inoperative during a period in which the owner planned to go on a vacation or a weekend trip with the insured vehicle;
  • The damage, act of vandalism, fire, theft or glass breakage sustained by the rented vehicle must lead to the insured vehicle being inoperative for more than 24 hours;
  • The downtime of the vehicle must be deemed necessary because a safety or comfort component does not permit the vehicle to operate in normal safety conditions;
